Autonomous solar generators for field irrigation

In collaboration with IMIDRA, the “La Chimenea” experimental farm in Aranjuez needed a power source capable of continuously running its irrigation pumps, without resorting to permanent infrastructure or connections to the conventional electricity grid.

The challenge: ensuring continuous, sustainable irrigation without grid power

The farm required a stable energy supply to continuously run its irrigation pumps, in an agricultural research setting where relying on the conventional electricity grid was not viable. A permanent installation would have meant construction work, greater impact on the land and a loss of flexibility, while fossil-fuel generators meant emissions, noise and high operating costs. The goal was clear: power the irrigation system autonomously and cleanly, without compromising the farm’s experimental activity.

The solution: an autonomous, non-invasive off-grid solar microgrid

A Nomad Energy Box 20 (107 kWp), integrated with a 350 kWh battery, to create a microgrid capable of operating in fully isolated mode. This off-grid setup continuously powers the irrigation pumps using solar energy, storing surplus power to ensure supply even outside daylight hours. As a temporary, autonomous and non-invasive installation, it can easily be relocated and adapted to different rural settings without leaving a footprint on the land.
